Fraidy's Unauthorized TriAmerica Triathlon Cheat Sheet:
This year's triathlon is a point-to-point race, Starting in Avon and ending in Vail. This means there are two transitions – swimming to biking in Nottingham Park and biking to running in Ford Park . I've created this cheat sheet to help athletes remember what items are needed for each, in what order to drop them off, and some course info to boot. This is filled with my own personal suggestions. (wear whatever you want, wetsuits are not mandatory).
Vail – Pack List, Transition 2:
-Towel for ground
-Running shoes
-Race number - (I would put this on one of those waist straps that are really easy to grab and go)
-Change of shirt for running if needed (I would wear the same one I am wearing on the bike).
Avon – Pack List, Transition 1:
Wetsuit
Biking Shoes and socks
Helmet
Sunglasses
Biking top (I would wear the same thing for the run)
Biking long sleeve shirt
Water bottle with power drink for bike ride.
(the other things your will need are your bike and the clothing you will be wearing under your wetsuit (tri-shorts and jog bra), which I would wear to the race)
Saturday:
Stop by the rec center between 11 am – 6 pm for packet pick-up. You can drop your bike in transition at this point – and are encouraged to drop your bike off (with race number!) sometime on Saturday before transition closes at 6PM. There will be security in transition overnight. I would put a plastic bag over the seat just in case it rains overnight. The Ford Park transition is being set up Saturday as well – although later in the day, and there will be overnight security. You can find out what time Vail transition is open at packet pick-up in Avon .
Sunday:
If you haven't already dropped your bike off in Avon , that should be your first stop. Otherwise, head directly to the parking structure in Vail Village and park your car. Have all items that you need for the race. There will be shuttles stopping on Frontage Road in front of the parking structure heading to Ford Park , or you can walk west.
FREE Shuttle from Ford Park to Avon will run from 4:30 am – 8 am, approx. every 20 minutes.
The shuttle is direct from Ford Park to Avon's Nottingham Park , but the shuttle will NOT transport bikes. (which is why we are encouraging Saturday bike drop off). Once you have set your running gear in Ford Park , Grab the items needed for transition 1 and catch the shuttle.
Avon , Transition 1:
Wear whatever you will be wearing for the bike portion. (I would wear tri shorts and a jog bra – that I would continue with for all parts of the race) You can wear sweats on top and some comfy shoes. There will be body marking and race timer chip pick up starting at 5 AM at transition 2, I would try and get here by 6 (international) or 6:30 (sprint) to have enough time to settle, and even relax a little before the race.
Once you come out of the swim – you can stuff all items from transition one into a race bag that will be transported for you to race finish. (you will receive race bag at packet pick up). (This includes your wetsuit, sweats, flip flops, etc.).
The temperature in the Lake has been between 65-70 degrees. The swim will run clockwise around the outer perimeter of the Lake . International swimmers will need to exit the water and cross and timing mat before reentering for the second lap.
Transition one will be in the northwest corner of the field. Racers will bike out through the municipal building lot; make a left on benchmark; and another left in front of the library. Bikers then turn left onto Beaver Creek Blvd heading northwest around the Lake until the light. At this intersection bikers will make a left on Highway 6 and head eastbound towards Vail.
Bikers will stay on highway 6 until Dowd Junction. Here bikers will enter the rec path. There is a very sharp turn on the rec path after the bridge. PLEASE SLOW DOWN HERE DRASTICALLY. Bikers stay on the bike path until they connect with frontage road. Sprinters will enter Ford Park directly from frontage road. International distancers will continue eastbound through East Vail towards Vail Pass and return on Frontage Road to Ford Park .
The run is a 5K loop that goes from Ford Park to Vail Village . The International distance will run the loop twice. The finish is in Vail Village .4 miles from Ford Park . At the race finish there will be food and celebrations. The belonging from transition one will be brought to a corner in transition two.
